Centre for Health Protection, DH【Tips for parents: preventing children from getting COVID-19】

Please take note of the following tips to avoid your children from getting COVID-19:

Receiving vaccination reduces the risk of getting and spreading COVID-19. Parents and eligible children should get vaccinated, unless contraindicated. In Hong Kong, children aged 3 years or above may receive CoronaVac (Sinovac) while children aged 5 years or above may choose to receive Comirnaty (BioNTech).

When going to public places, adults and children aged 2 years or above should wear a well-fitted surgical mask of appropriate size, unless they are not suitable to wear masks due to medical reasons. When one has respiratory symptoms, please wear a surgical mask even at home and seek medical advice promptly.

Adults should wash their hands frequently and educate their children to wash hands properly with soap and water and rub for at least 20 seconds. Tell the children not to touch their eyes, mouth and nose before washing hands and set a good example for them.

Cover your mouth and nose with tissue paper when coughing or sneezing and educate your children to do the same.

Clean and disinfect home environment regularly with 1 in 99 diluted household bleach, in particular the frequently touched surfaces. Use 70% alcohol for metallic surfaces. Pour water regularly in the U-trap. After using the toilet, put the toilet lid down before flushing to avoid spreading germs.

Maintaining social distance is an effective way of preventing spread of the virus. Follow the regulations announced by the Government about social distancing measures.

Open windows at home as far as possible to keep the place well ventilated. Good ventilation can help reduce viral particle concentration and reduce risk of infection.

A healthy lifestyle including balanced diet, regular exercise and adequate sleep, helps boost the immune system. Take the opportunity to encourage and practise healthy living in your family. Parents should not smoke and avoid alcohol consumption.
